It's been declared!! 13th May 2017

Run ~ bike ~ Hike ~ Kayak

If raw, rugged unspoilt scenery has anything to do with the quality of an Adventure Race, then the Wild Atlantic Adventure Race (W.A.A.R) is one to head for in 2017.

W.A.A.R takes place on Saturday May 13th in the Rosses, West Donegal. So remote and dramatic is the Atlantic coast from this point that it is said on a wet day you can’t see the tip of your nose yet on a clear day you can see the top of the Empire State Building…..nearly!!

Rich in its roll out of musicians and sportsmen from Clannad to Packie Bonner and Daniel O’Donnell to Enya, Altan and others, the locals will host the second ever W.A.A.R in an area which has seen an explosion of adventure sportsmen and hardy bucks on bikes.

You could not meet a friendlier group of locals than in the Rosses but when they decide upon an Adventure route, the welcome is one which aims to test the visiting adventurist first before the essential Pub session later in the night.
The W.A.A.R route takes the participants on a 7.5k run which is only part-road and then a mix of running near two dramatic beaches at Carrickfin and Mullaghderg. Fewer places in Ireland have such dramatic sea scapes and the athletes will get a chance to breath in some of the Wild Atlantic air as they finish and get ready to cycle. The 42.5k cycle is a great contrast of Atlantic Coastline before climbing gently into the famous Hills of Donegal outside of Dungloe with this element including a bike dismount and a 2k Hike at Meenaweel Chapel just in case anyone wants a quick prayer or confession. Once back on the bike, the route continues
over lower mountains towards the end line and before that a 1k Kayak challenge on the well known waters of Mullaghdearg lake before running  a couple of hundred metres down the large GAA pitch to the finish line.

W.A.A.R promises much.
Coastline, Beaches, Mountains, Hills, Lake, Road…..the W.A.A.R has it all covered but talking through it in this article does no justice to what it really is. It is along this very route that the author John Mc Bride wrote the words of the very famous song “The Homes of Donegal” and he mentioned in the song, now recorded by 45 different folk…..”your hearts are like your mountains in the Homes of Donegal”.

Big hearts are indeed required for the W.A.A.R …but likewise big welcomes will be afforded to those who compete. Bígí linn – Be with us.
